Health authorities on Friday listed level one of the ABS Census Campus in Belconnen as a casual exposure site for the period between 8.40am and 5.30pm on Monday, September 6.
ACT Health also said anyone who worked anywhere in the building, at 40 Cameron Avenue, during that period should monitor for symptoms.
An email from the Community and Public Sector Union to members in the Bureau of Statistics said the staff member tested positive to the coronavirus on Tuesday after working in the building on Monday.
A bureau spokesperson said the agency had provided details of all potentially impacted staff to the territory's health authorities.

"ACT Health have assessed the incident and are providing advice and instruction to those staff considered close and casual contacts," the spokesperson said.
"The Census Campus has undergone a deep clean and continues to operate in line with ACT Health guidelines, and in accordance with ABS COVIDSafe procedures.
"The ABS will take guidance from ACT Health as to the continued safe operation of the Census Campus."
The spokesperson said since the ACT lockdown started, the bureau had told employees to work from home unless they had an essential operational need to attend the office.
Late last month a Services Australia employee tested positive for COVID after attending work at the agency's Caroline Chisholm Centre offices in Tuggeranong.
Thousands of public servants are working from home during the ACT's lockdown, but many staff with roles requiring them to stay in their usual offices have had to keep working there.
