An Association of Consulting Engineers representative, Mr F. J. Brookman, plugged in an EV during a demonstration.
Then minister for national development, Kevin Newman, spoke to the media.
He said electric passenger cars could become available to the public at reasonable prices in the 1980s.
Mr Newman said a report from the National Energy Advisory Committee had concluded that batteries, control systems and motors were improving constantly.
He said that any initiative aimed at increasing national awareness of the need for energy conservation should be highly commended.
The minister received a report of a feasibility study on electric cars from the president of the Association of Consulting Engineers, Harold Richards.
