Four new exhibitions opened online at PhotoAccess this week, celebrating the outcomes of its 2021 artists' residencies. Experiments in Living [Melt] by Sammy Hawker (ACT); Surface Appearances by Eunie Kim (ACT); Light Materials by Caroline Huf (ACT); and 398 by Aloisia Cudmore (ACT). In Experiments in Living [Melt] Hawker investigates sites of the Anthropocene. She interacts with the often invisible temporal realities to create a visual image - water, salt, frost - and challenges us to reconsider the illusion of control we hold over the natural world. Hawker will speak with PhotoAccess's Caitlin Seymour-King on Thursday, October 28 at 7pm. In Surface Appearances, Kim uses materials and subjects from a contemporary Australian setting while conjuring the aesthetic of traditional Korean painting - exploring the immigrant experience of reconciling one identity with another. Huf's Light Materials is an exhibition of the artist's experimental "weaving" of film; traversing the digital and physical realms. Finally, 398 examines the experience of youth at the centre of post-digital and post-pandemic uncertainty where the only reliable sources of hope are the relationships we nurture. Craft ACT will reopen on October 29 with its 2021 members exhibition, Transformation, showcasing contemporary works until December 14. Open for the same period is the CO:LAB exhibition, the culmination of a year-long Craft ACT pilot professional development and exchange program. Artists Cathy Franzi, Alison Jackson and Dan Lorrimer worked with an architect and clients to develop a new range of lighting pieces. See: craftact.org.au.
