Substitute Borja Iglesias has scored a late winner as Real Betis climbed to eighth place in La Liga courtesy of a 1-0 win at Alaves.
Striker Iglesias tapped home in the 89th minute after a pass from 40-year-old former Spain winger Joaquin, moving Manuel Pellegrini's men level on 15 points with Barcelona.
It was the second consecutive loss for Alaves after their shock win against defending champions Atletico Madrid.
Alaves stayed in second-to-last-place, one point better than winless Getafe.
Espanyol built on their victory over Real Madrid last time out by defeating Cadiz 2-0.
Goals either side of halftime from Raul de Tomas and Nico Melamed earned the hosts a third win from four to lift them to 11th - after a difficult start to the campaign.
The winless streak of 16th-placed Cadiz was extended to four matches.
