Coming off his Olympic campaign in Tokyo earlier this year, Chalmers is back in the pool focusing on short course swimming as he takes part in the FINA World Cup series before heading to the Netherlands for six weeks for the International Swimming League.

Starting in Berlin, Chalmers won gold in the 50m and 100m freestyle events, with a silver in the 200m freestyle and setting a personal best of 1:40.82.

In the second leg at Budapest, Chalmers would again in gold in the 50m and 100m freestyle, setting a personal best and falling 0.04 short of a new Australian record in the 100m event.

However would then break the Australian, Oceania and Commonwelath short course record in with a time of 45.03 in the 100m freestyle, as well as setting a new Australian and Oceania record time of 22.24 in the 50m butterfly in Doha, Qatar last weekend.

The records continued to fall as this week in Kazan, Russia he broke his own Australian and Oceania short course record in the 50m freestyle with a time of 20.68.

The best was yet to come as Chalmers then broke the world short course record in the 100m freestyle with a time of 44.84, breaking the previous record set in 2008 by France's Amaury Leveaux by 0.1 seconds.

Chalmers said it was great to be swimming internationally again as he prepared for the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham in 2022 and the Paris Olympics in 2024.

"It's been nice to come away, swim personal best times and be winning races again," he said.

"I've started doing butterfly again at the moment so it's nice to be able to get the Australian record in an event I haven't swum in about seven or eight years."

While Chalmers is shaving seconds off his personal best and national records, he is also seeking Australia's Craziest Beard as a new brand partner with men's grooming brand Wahl.

As part of the promotion for Wahl's new waterproof stainless steel beard trimmer, Chalmers has helped launch the competition which will award $2500 in products to the owner of Australia's biggest, zaniest or funniest beard.

Chalmers said Wahl got in contact with his management while he was in hotel quarantine following the Tokyo Olympics about doing a commercial and after learning what it was about, he jumped at it.

"A lot of commercials I do are pretty serious and always swimming based, whereas this one was a bit lighthearted and a bit of fun," he said.

"Such an important thing for me is shaving down, it's the thing I do the day before I race.

"I lost one of my races (recently) by 0.02 of a second, which is absolutely nothing at all so shaving down to make sure that I'm smooth through the water is very important when my races come down to such a fractional margin."

Chalmers said he was excited to be involved with Wahl and said he would be the judge of the competition.

He said with COVID and lockdowns many people had grown out their beards so he was excited to see what facial hair was out there.

"I know there's going to be some pretty crazy ones out there so I'm excited to see the content that comes through and being able to be a judge of it I think again it's a pretty lighthearted competition that flows on pretty well from the commercial I had just shot," he said.

As for his plans for the end of the year, Chalmers said he had World Championships in Abu Dhabi in December before coming home for the holidays.

He said he planned to spend some time relaxing with family and friends, which includes plans to come to Port Lincoln for Christmas, before his attention turns to Birmingham in 2022.
