Chief Minister Andrew Barr said the government was seeking feedback and interest in build-to-rent projects from industry and the community housing sector, who were willing to build and operate the product.

"We believe build-to-rent offers a great opportunity for industry investors looking for long term options that will also help to improve housing availability, diversity and choice," Mr Barr said.

The ACT government committed $720,000 towards an expressions-of-interest process for firms eager to build and operate long-term affordable rental housing in build-to-rent schemes.

The government is exploring two build-to-rent projects on land release sites in Turner and Lawson.

Mr Barr has previously told The Canberra Times that the burgeoning build-to-rent sector would play a critical role in solving Canberra's housing woes.

The government is seeking feedback through the Suburban Land Agency.

"The build-to-rent model is just one of the many ways we are working to meet the territory's diverse and changing housing needs now and into the future," Housing and Suburban Development Minister Yvette Berry said.

"Most importantly, we are making a difference to the sustainable supply of housing for households at all income levels."
