Mature age students excelled in their final examinations at the Australian National University, The Canberra Times reported on this day in 1971.
Among the students who achieved outstanding results were a 44-year-old public servant, and a 42-year-old RAAF officer.

The public servant, Mr K. M. Crotty of Hackett, graduated as the law student in the graduating class at ANU with the highest average marks, winning him the ACT Supreme Court Judges Prize.
Mr Crotty moved to Canberra because his job required him to, and decided to study law as he said it was better than joining a bowling club.
The RAAF officer, Squadron Leader E.C. Bloomfield, completed a first-class honours degree in economics. The previous year he had been awarded his pass degree in economics, having studied part-time over the course of eight years.
Some of this study had been undertaken while he was stationed with the RAAF at Townsville, Queensland.
ANU's high achievers were not limited to mature age students though - Mr Phillip McNamara, 21, of Campbell, completed his law degree with first class honours, winning the ACT Bar Association Prize for Evidence.
