The squad were awaiting their first test results on Friday morning, leaving Canberra's head coach Vicki Linton no choice but to make a call less than 24-hours before their 7.30am flight to Adelaide on Saturday.
A negative COVID-19 test 72-hours before, isolation until a second negative test on arrival in South Australia and the state's predicted heat are all moving factors Linton needed to consider.
"It's not easy at all, in some ways this year's a little bit more complicated than last year. Obviously, the pandemic continues to evolve and we need to just roll with it," she said.
"So there's a lot of things we need to take into consideration but we're planning to head off [Saturday].
"We have to test on arrival and isolate until we get our results back. So that could impact us, we're still hoping to get a training session in that day because otherwise it will be a day-and-a-half locked in a hotel room and two days without exercise leading into the game."
MORE IN CANBERRA SPORT:
Linton expected their tests - taken within the 72-hour window before travel - would be returned sometime Friday to allow her to make a call after their final training session on who would be picked for the round two fixture.
Adelaide walked away victorious the last time the two sides met in the 2020-21 season, and both sides will be eager to secure their first points following round one losses.
In addition to the logistics surrounding two COVID tests, Linton said players form meant it would be a tough decision picking a 16-player squad for the fixture.
"To be honest, it's competitive for spots so it may not be until after training," she said.
"No injuries as such, so we'll just see how everyone is [on Friday] and make decisions."
One player United fans will be eager to see in a green jersey in coming weeks will be Allira Toby.
Toby featured in 14 games for Sydney FC last season, but still has a question mark over her readiness to get back on the pitch for United. The 27-year-old attacker is unlikely to be named for the round two fixture.
United's defence and midfield may gain an added boost if loan-player Karly Roestbakken earns more minutes this week in central defence, to allow Grace Maher to push into the midfield lineup.
Roestbakken played 30 minutes in the side's 1-0 loss to Melbourne City last week, marking her most significant minutes since her injury in April.
"[Toby's] one kind of question mark at this stage, so probably, a little bit under done still, so likely another week," Linton said.
"Thirty minutes was the most [Roestbakken's] played in a long time. I just need to be mindful of that, but I think she's good to go."
