Forecaster David Wilke said the next few days would be warm, around 30 degrees, before a "slight drop in temperature" on Thursday.

"Thursday to Christmas Day, it's gonna be slowly warming up. At this stage mostly it'll be reasonably dry during that period, he said.

Mr Wilke said for Christmas Eve, a top of 27 degrees was expected with the weather "getting a bit cloudy and potentially we could see a couple of showers".

"Christmas Eve and Christmas Day there is a chance we could see a shower or storm, more likely on Christmas Day, but I wouldn't want to overplay it."

On Christmas Day temperatures are expected to increase to a top of 29 degrees, partly cloudy and a 30 per cent chance of rainfall.

"I think generally, it'll be a warmish day on Christmas Day, and there is the potential we could see some afternoon showers or storms but they may miss Canberra," Mr Wilke said.

Slight winds may pick up in the afternoon, but the forecaster was hopeful for a warm Christmas day.

"Optimistically I think most of the day will be pretty nice, particularly the early part of the afternoon and morning," Mr Wilke said.

Boxing Day is set to cool down to 25 degrees with a 50 per cent chance of rainfall.
