The Vinnies Christmas night patrol was up and running, with volunteers Sue Hall and Cathrine De Danann eagerly helping anyone in need on the special night.

"For me it's like volunteering on any other day of the year so that the night patrol is there for people to pick up food or toiletries or have a bit of a chat, it's something consistent for those in need," Ms Hall said.

"This year was important for me to do, due to COVID the Vinnies staff haven't had much of a break, so me being a volunteer getting out there is great."

Cathrine De Danann says it's an important part of Christmas to give back as that's what the day should be ultimately about.

"My heart just aches for those who have struggled in society, so this is one way to make sure we're all being looked after," Ms De Danann said.

"It may not be much but it's at least something I can do to help out, especially on Christmas Day."

Philip Jones is the ACT head of marketing for Vinnies and says it's a special time of year particularly as they celebrate their 20^th year of night patrol.

"Night patrol is probably one of the most visible services we offer all year round to people in need so it's great that we're celebrating our 20^th year this Christmas," Mr Jones said.

"What's so lovely about it is we have many incredible staff but also volunteers who help out on Christmas as well.

"It provides contact for people who need not only our services but also other assistance services. Whether it be a casual conversation, a bite to eat, some advice it's very supportive and non-judgmental.

"They're out there rain, hail or shine so the volunteers are fantastic."
