Charlotte was the most popular girls name for the second-straight year, while Henry and Oliver toppled William to claim equal-first ranking for most popular boys' name.

Parents Lauren and Jared Streatfeild welcomed baby Henry on July 14, 2021, and said the name was their first preference.

"We went through the top 100 names for the past few years and my husband and I ranked them which was quite a long process and Henry ended up being number one for both of us," Ms Streatfeild said.

"We just really liked the name Henry as an old classic. We had well and truly decided and committed by the first 20 weeks into my pregnancy. You don't really know any bad Henrys so for us it seemed like a great name.

"We knew it was popular when we chose it but didn't realise it was going to be number one this year.

"It's interesting because I don't know many Henrys right now."

William, Theodore and Thomas made up the top five for boys, while Matilda, Grace, Ivy and Olivia filled out the top five for girls.

For the Streatfeilds, they have loved having Henry in their lives for the past five months even with the lack of sleep at this point.

"He's a really chatty baby which is very cute, but he's now at the stage where he's very active even during the night," she said.

"So sleep is rare for me and my husband."

The couple welcomed baby Henry into the world about three weeks before lockdown, which Ms Streatfeild said was difficult but also special as the whole family could be together for Henry's early weeks.

"My husband Jared had four months paternity leave with him which was really lovely for the family," Ms Streatfeild said.

"Our three-year-old daughter Aurora also adores him, early on she would beg to hold him and give him lots of cuddles."

"Overall people say his name really suits him, that he looks like a Henry.

"We've also nicknamed him Hen for some reason, which has also led to us calling him Hen and Chook so it's pretty cute."

In 2021, over 6,330 babies were registered in the ACT which is a slight increase to the 6,205 registered in 2020.

The importance of registering is highlighted by MLA Tara Cheyne, saying the registration of births is compulsory and must be done within the first six months of a child being born.

"While having a new baby is an exciting time, we also recognise that it's an incredibly busy time for many families," Ms Cheyne said.

"That's why Access Canberra has made it easier for parents or carers to register a child born in the ACT."

Registration can be done in minutes on the Access Canberra website by using the online birth registration form.

The issuing of a birth certificate should be approximately 15 days after registration depending on Christmas shutdown periods.
