Parking in the city was a topic of discussion in Canberra on this day in 1990, as the ACT Minister for Finance and Urban Services, Craig Duby, said he would ban commuter parking in Braddon, Turner and Reid between 9 and 11am.

This move had the potential to increase the cost of parking a car by $350 a year. A cabinet submission from the Transport Policy Branch indicated that the ban would result in a higher demand for car parks in Civic, although Mr Duby said he believed this would not be the case.
The submission outlined a need for increased parking facilities, and highlighted that, without government subsidies, the cost of parking would dramatically increase from $2.75 a day to $6.50.
About 1500 commuters were parking in streets in the inner city suburbs, who would need to change their parking arrangements and park in Civic. Mr Duby said there were sufficient long-stay car parks available to accommodate the commuters, but the cabinet submission noted that the long-stay car parks would overload within the following year.
Mr Duby did not seem concerned by the submission's identified parking issue, indicating that his government did not intend for the population of Civic to expand much further.
