1. Mad Max-a-thon
They are some of the most influential films in Australian cinema history and they're on the big screen this weekend. Mad Max, Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior, Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome and the black and chrome version of Mad Max: Fury Road are screening this weekend at the National Film and Sound Archive. The special Mad Max-a-thon ties in with the new Australians & Hollywood exhibition. The Mad Max-a-thon kicks off on Friday at 7pm with the first film. It continues on Saturday from 3pm and 6pm with Mad Max 2 and Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, then on Sunday at 6pm, there is a screening of Fury Road. Tickets from $12 from nfsa.gov.au.
2. Cancon
This one is for gamers. The Canberra Games Society hosts Cancon 2022 this weekend. It features tournaments, participation games, trade stands, a poster competition and more. If you pay to play a game you get entry to the convention is included in your entry fee. Saturday and Sunday, from 8.30am to 6.30pm. Monday from 8.30am to 4.30pm. Budawang Building, Exhibition Park in Canberra. To book a two-hour timeslot go to cgs.asn.au. Entry for spectators is $2.
3. Smith's Summer Series
This weekend is part of Smith's Summer Series, with two afternoons of live music. Saturday, from 3pm see Muesli take to the stage. They're one of Canberra's newest pop/funk/indie bands with a unique blend of jazz harmony, pop arrangements and funk sensibility. Sunday's 4pm gig features Jason Recliner. No stranger to Smith Alternative's stage, they may just be Canberra's best band named after a chair. Tickets from $10 from smithsalternative.com.au.
4. A Tuscan Lunch
Celebrate the art of Jeffrey Smart with a Tuscan-style lunch in the National Gallery's dining room. Inspired by the great Italian trattorias, head chef Samuel McCarthy's menu showcases locally sourced and fresh produce as he introduces his spin on the traditional Italian primi, secondi and dolce courses - of which, guests can choose two. Friday, Saturday and Sunday, from 11.30am and 1.30pm. Tickets from $55 from nga.gov.au.
5. Magic Beach
Delight the kids as the school holidays comes to an end with this adaptation of the classic children's book, Magic Beach, by Alison Lester. Every year, an everyday family go on a beach holiday. This isn't just any beach - it's Magic Beach, where everything you can imagine becomes real. But this year is different. As the eldest child begins to grow up, does she have to leave the magic behind? Saturday, from 12pm and 3pm. Sunday, from 10am, 12pm and 3pm. Canberra Theatre Centre. Tickets from $36 for adults and $26 for kids from canberratheatrecentre.com.au.
