Ms Flint was first elected to federal parliament in 2016 and won again in 2019.

Her time in parliament was marred by "repetitive, sickening, sexist and misogynist behaviour" she says was initiated by the left in the lead up to the 2019 election and has not stopped since.

Ms Flint said in the past three years she had been criticised for her looks, stalked and threatened with rape, strangulation and murder.

She criticised Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese for not taking action against the attacks and asked him to lead on the issue of women's safety in public life.

"To Get Up, Labor and the unions, you need to finally show some leadership and put a stop to this behaviour," she said in parliament on Wednesday.

The member for Boothby in South Australia has also been the target of online abuse and called on the parliament to regulate social media companies to stop such attacks.

"Experiencing the online attacks over multiple platforms as I have since last December, I think (social media) is like a festering, toxic sewer," she said.

"Having seen and personally experienced the sexist and misogynist attitudes, women need all-encompassing protection from sexism and misogyny through the Sex Discrimination Act."

Ms Flint said she was hopeful things would be better for women in parliament thanks to Sex Discrimination Commissioner Kate Jenkin's report on parliamentary culture.

"This is a hard place to be a woman ... I have never worked harder in my life and (this government) has achieved so much," she said.
