The defence of free speech is ever more important today with the increasing persecution of dissident voices in autocracies. PEN International: An Illustrated History documents 100 years of PEN, the largest and oldest writers organisation in the world, which has "placed the celebration of literature and the defence of free speech at the centre of humanity's struggle against repression" since its foundation in October 1921.
