Lake Burley Griffin would soon have a tourist ferry cruising its waters, The Canberra Times reported on this day in 1964.
The minister for the interior, Mr Anthony, said he was hopeful the ferry would begin operating by the end of the year.

The ferry would have to be of "graceful appearance", and able to carry at least 70 people.
Mr Anthony said tenders would be called shortly after he made the announcement, and that tenderers would be required to provide a service at least daily.
The ferry would also need an open deck for the passengers to view Canberra and its landmarks from as they travelled across the lake, but also need an enclosed, heated cabin space for passengers to shelter in against the city's winter.
It also was required to have a draught of less than 4 feet, and needed to be capable of at least 10 knots.
