Central Spears break ACT Gridiron duck

The Central Spears have picked up their first win of the 2018 ACT Gridiron season with a convincing 38-0 drubbing of fellow strugglers the Barbarians.

Still missing several key players, the Barbarians put up a brave fight but it wasn’t enough to stop the resurgence of the Spears at Greenway Oval on Saturday.

Touchdowns from running back Stuart Duncan and a quarterback sneak from James Micallef saw the Spears take a 12-0 lead into the first break. It was all Spears from then on.

The second quarter came to life, when a neat pass downfield from Micallef found an open Simon McInnes who took a great catch and crossed the line to make it 18-0.

Another solid run from Micallef saw him claim his second touchdown of the game and push the lead out to 25 at half-time.

A double to running back Evan Bullock put the icing on the cake in the third quarter and took the game beyond the Barbarians.

The Spears \will now look towards a showdown with the undefeated University of Canberra Firebirds next week.

The Barbarians are struggling with defending the run game and are lacking communication across the park. They have a lot to work on defensively if they are to be a part of finals football.
