The trout streams are in tip-top condition for this time of year. Snowmelt and regular showers have kept the high altitude waterways in great nick. The hot weather has led to a rise in insect activity, which is great news for fly casters.

Dry fly fishing is good on the Eucumbene, Thredbo and Murrumbidgee rivers. The same goes for most of the smaller streams and creeks in the mountains.

If we get follow-up rain, expect top-shelf dry fly fishing well into the New Year.

Lake Jindabyne is 80 per cent full and fishing well. The trout are around the margins at night and in the early morning, but are moving to deeper water in the heat of the day.

Anglers should find browns, rainbows and Atlantic salmon from the bank at dawn and dusk on bait, lure and fly.

Trolling lures up to 10 metres below the surface is the way to connect to fish during the day.

Murray cod fishing has been reasonably productive if you’re prepared to work for your fish.

Cod over a metre long are on the cards at Burrinjuck, particularly on trolled lures in the late afternoon and evening. Wyangala Dam is also fishing well for cod and golden perch.

Cod enthusiasts fishing their favourite holes along the Murrumbidgee River near Canberra are finding fish on spinnerbaits and swimbaits. Early and late in the day is best. And the further off the beaten track you go, the better the fishing should be.

It’s that time of the year when saltwater anglers are spoiled for choice, with the coast offering almost too many options to choose from.

Estuary fishing remains the stand-out. There’s no better time than right now to score a big flattie on a soft plastic or a whiting on a surface lure.

A handful of trophy flatties have even been taken on fly at Tuross, with the biggest nudging 90cm.

With the water over 20 degrees now, you never know what you’re going to get in the southern estuaries. For example, a stray school of kingfish was recently spotted in the tiny Tomega River at Tomakin.

Expect more surprises as summer unfolds. If you’re after a bass, try Brogo Dam near Bega. Anglers fishing from kayaks are getting plenty of fish from this pretty little waterway on surface lures, plastics and vibes.

Reef fishing for tasty bread and butter species like flathead, snapper and morwong is excellent.

Sand flathead are plentiful in 30m of water, while tiger flathead, snapper and morwong are biting in 50-70m of water. There are even a few gummy sharks around.

Any reef or patch of gravel is worth a shot, with some of the best action unfolding off Moruya, Bermagui and Merimbula.

The occasional yellowfin tuna is being caught in deep water off Bermagui and Tathra.
