"I do the test, I pass the test, I am 90 per cent a citizen. One more appointment, I will be a citizen," he told The Age and Sydney Morning Herald.

"The ceremony [is] next week, because I passed the test."

The ceremony will mark the end of a process that began in June 2014 when the now 25-year-old Araibi arrived in Australia from Bahrain. He had fled the country where he was born after being found guilty of vandalising a police station in 2012, and sentenced to 10 years jail.

Mr Araibi has always denied the charges and pointed out he was playing in a nationally televised football game in Bahrain that finished about half an hour before the alleged vandalism incident occurred.

The refugee footballer was at the centre of a months-long diplomatic fight that gained international attention earlier this year after he was detained by Thailand for 76 days while Bahrain sought his extradition.

The footballer, who has been back in Australia for about three weeks and who has resumed training with his club Pascoe Vale FC, said he was delighted to finally receive his Australian citizenship.

He joked that after many hours of study "I know the law now ... I did 100 per cent on the test, no mistakes."

Asked which questions had stood out, Araibi listed three: what is the meaning of the stars under the Union Jack on the Australian flag, what was the date of Australia Day, and what are the colours of the Aboriginal flag.

Just three days after being released from jail by Thailand and allowed to return to Australia, Araibi was welcomed to Canberra by Prime Minister Scott Morrison, Foreign Minister Marise Payne, Opposition Leader Bill Shorten and a host of other federal MPs.

At the time, Mr Morrison said he was very pleased Araibi had been freed and allowed to return home to Australia and hinted his application could be processed soon.

"I don't think it's too far away," the prime minister said at the time.

Araibi has not returned to playing for Pascoe Vale FC but said he hoped to start playing again in a matter of weeks.

Araibi was granted refugee status by Australia and had travelled to Bangkok on Australian-issued travel documents with his wife for their honeymoon.

But he was detained on arrival in Bangkok under an Interpol Red Notice, a form of international arrest warrant, that should not have been issued - refugees are not supposed to be subject to Red Notices issued by the country from which they fled.

However, Australian Border Force later announced that an officer forgot to send an email to the Australian Federal Police, which would have stopped the Notice being issued.

After a high profile campaign led by former Socceroos captain Craig Foster, and a significant diplomatic pressure from the Morrison government, Thailand blinked on February 11 and agreed to let Araibi return to Australia - rather then being returned to Bahrain, where he feared he would be tortured.
