Tight international windows meant many players didn't arrive until late Tuesday night, while a bout of gastro stopped several training late in the week, with coach Tony Gustavsson touching on the limited build-up in his pre-match press conference.

Australia's defensive errors allowed Ashley Hatch to get the US off the mark after 24 seconds with Rose Lavelle doubling the lead in the 49th minute and Lindsey Horan scoring from the penalty spot in the 68th.

"It's been a really weird week for us as a group, to be honest, a bit of a bug going around the group, so some of us weren't fit even 24 hours ago. We've had a few injuries as well," Simon said after Saturday's match.

"I'm not one to make excuses but definitely, I think we'll be in better shape going into Tuesday's game and hopefully a couple more days to get ourselves back on board and closer to being 100 per cent fit and healthy. That's half of it."

Simon and her teammates needed to be more "clinical" in attack and more composed in defence on Tuesday.

"We can definitely look at the review of this game as well and take away some positives and also some things that we can work on," Simon said.

".... We can back up and, and improve and be better than we were today.

"Me as an individual, but also as a collective, I believe that we have more to give and we will do that on Tuesday."

Gustavsson didn't expect to have a full squad available.

Alanna Kennedy (quad) and Emily Gielnik (toe) are expected to also miss the second game, while Gustavsson couldn't confirm Clare Polkinghorne (rested) would be fit.

"I still think it's going to be a huge challenge for us," Gustavsson said.

"Recovery status for the ones that played many minutes today, it's a short turnaround.

"Some of the players that are unavailable (now) are most likely going to be unavailable for that game, there's still some question marks.

"I might not get the answer until late Monday night, maybe even Tuesday, on game day.

"But as a coach I'm used to working to that and the players have to be used to it as well."
