Greenway's former fire station will get a $1.3 million transformation into an ambulance hub to service Canberra's southern suburbs in this year's budget.

The territory government announced nearly four years ago the ACT Fire and Rescue site in the centre of Tuggeranong would be turned into an ambulance station, under a plan to cater to Canberra's long-term expansion and population growth.
ACT Emergency Services Minister Joy Burch visited the site on Tuesday and announced $1.253 million had been set aside for the makeover in the 2015-16 territory budget.
Ms Burch said the conversion would be far cheaper than a new building and crews would service the Tuggeranong area from Kambah to Calwell.
ACT Ambulance Service chief officer David Foot said the major refurbishment at Greenway would include interior remodelling and roof works.
He said the site had been identified as "an incredibly sensible place" for paramedics to be based and would improve response times.
"The interim planning is there will be one crew stationed here permanently 24 hours a day, seven days a week," Mr Foot said.
"We've certainly got potential inside the facility itself and on the land here to expand as required."
The annual Report on Government Services, released in January, found ambulance response times in the capital were the fastest they've been in five years.
Mr Foot said the report's findings showed the service had kept pace with a surging population and increased demand for services.
"If we weren't keeping up with growth you'd see that in the response times," Mr Foot said.
Firefighters were relocated to the new $17 million ACT Fire and Rescue South Tuggeranong station at Conder, which opened in March.
The ambulance crews that service the region are currently located at Kambah but will move to the facility once the transformation has been completed in about 12 months.
Ms Burch said the ACT government would consult residents and emergency services over the next six months on potential future uses of the Kambah building.
The ACT government's Station Upgrade and Relocation Strategy of 2011 set out major investments for emergency services in the territory and aimed to set them up for the next 20 years of growth.
It led to many ageing facilities owned by the ACT Ambulance Service, Fire Brigade, and Rural Fire Service either being upgraded or replaced.
