Kindanna Faye Williams, 19, faced the ACT Magistrates Court yesterday charged with aggravated robbery.
Police say the victim and a friend were sitting outside the Kippax Fair shops on Sunday afternoon having dinner at a restaurant.
It is alleged Williams and two other women approached the pair before Williams grabbed a bag off the seat and tried to run away.
The victim’s friend got up and chased the accused woman but another of Williams’ companions allegedly pushed her to the ground and struck her twice in the face.
The woman did not need medical treatment.
The court today heard the stolen wallet contained about $36.
Williams, through her lawyer, flagged an intention to plead guilty but the solicitor said he would write to the DPP and ask for the charge to be downgraded.
The accused woman was on bail for a minor shoplifting offence allegedly committed in her NSW hometown of Griffith.
Police opposed bail, arguing she posed a flight risk, could reoffend if released on bail and might interfere with witnesses.
The court heard Williams was drunk at the time of the robbery and allegedly committed the crime because she had no money.
But her lawyer argued his client had only one charge of failing to appear before a court on her record, and in that instance had handed herself in to police.
Magistrate David Mossop agreed to release Williams on bail, ordering her to forfeit a $500 surety, and $500 of someone else’s money, if she failed to answer bail.
He warned the defendant he would “throw the book at you” if she failed to show up for her next court date in November.
