a triple-A triple-0 call about 1.40pm alerted authorities to the fire in a two-storey house on Hughes Crescent. By the time firefighters arrived, the fire had already taken hold in the back section of the house.

There was one person home at the time but they escaped without injury.

Fire crews were able to stop the fire spreading to the front section of the house but smoke and water damage was described by Commander Leigh Curtis as ''significant''.

''It was well alight when we arrived, especially at the back area of the house,'' Commander Curtis said.

''We've saved the front portion of the house in terms of fire, even though there's significant [smoke and water] damage.''

The fire was not being treated as suspicious but authorities were not expecting to know the cause until some time on Monday.

''We've got ideas as to how it might have started but it still has to be investigated,'' Commander Curtis said.

Three fire pumpers, the breathing apparatus van, the Hazardous Materials Unit and two commanders were called out to the incident.

There was no damage to neighbouring properties.
