Mr White’s achievement was celebrated during a short ceremony in the ACT Supreme Court on Tuesday morning.

In a speech before the capital’s legal fraternity to mark the occasion, Chief Justice Helen Murrell said Mr White’s appointment reflected his achievements as an advocate, as an independent leader, and as a contributor to the community.

She described him as a "steadfastly independent" leader who took brave and unpopular decisions when necessary.

"Your elevation to Senior Counsel not only reflects your standing but also attests to the strength of the justice system in the ACT," Chief Justice Murrell said.

"You are acutely conscious that your office is both critical to the proper administration of the criminal justice system and representative of the people of the ACT.

"A truly independent DPP is essential to any healthy legal community."

Mr White graduated from the Australian National University in 1981 and started his career as a commercial litigator in Sydney.

He joined the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions in 1985 and became director of the ACT DPP in 2008.

Chief Justice Murrell noted Mr White had undertaken "almost every type of criminal work" during his three decades as a prosecutor, including conducting murder trials and appeals.

The judge said the newly minted silk had a number of strong personal qualities.

"You are a fearless and passionate advocate," Chief Justice Murrell said.

"You are a serious, modest person with an academic bent. You are a quiet achiever.

"You have contributed to the profession through advocacy training and through your membership of many committees and associations."

Chief Justice Murrell said Mr White’s major contribution to the ACT legal community had been through his role as ACT DPP boss.

The judge described him as a “feminist who supports and promotes women within your office".

"You are a loyal leader and a much-loved mentor to the young, talented and enthusiastic lawyers at your office.

"You always back your troops on the ground."
