The ACT has likely elected a record proportion of women to the Legislative Assembly, a result that has been hailed as a remarkable breakthrough in the territory's political diversity.

Although the result is still far from final, trends in the current count suggest a likely total of 13 women in the 25-member ninth Legislative Assembly.
That could present the ACT's parliament with its first ever female majority.
Currently, it appears likely there will be seven women in Labor's caucus, five in the Liberals, and the Greens' Caroline Le Couteur, although the numbers could change in coming days.
Together, the women in all three parties would account for 52 per cent of total members.
That's a dramatic improvement on the eighth Assembly, where there were six women in the 17-member parliament, a proportion of roughly 40 per cent.
Re-elected Labor minister and likely Deputy Chief Minister Yvette Berry described the result as a "remarkable outcome for women".
Ms Berry said the electorate had made it clear they wanted more women represented in the Legislative Assembly.
"When you have more women involved in government and in the decision-making process, there is more of a focus on the issues that affect women," she said.
"There's such a diverse range of experiences across all of the women who have been successfully elected."
"It's going to be a really good Assembly where women can work together and get really good outcomes for women."
Labor has put its strong female representation down to the party's affirmative action policy, which currently requires 40 per cent of party positions and public office preselections are to be held by women.
Labor's national conference adopted a target of 50 per cent, a goal which will be transitioned to in the next decade - 45 per cent by 2022, and 50 per cent by 2025.
ACT Labor branch secretary Matthew Byrne said the increased representation in the Legislative Assembly showed the affirmative action policy was working.
Mr Byrne said the proportional increase meant that the Assembly was now "starting to look more like the community it represents".
"I think you can tell from the candidates we fielded that affirmative action actually encourages candidates of both genders to run," he said.
The Liberals do not have a formal affirmative action policy, but managed to match the proportion of female candidates standing.
Women accounted for 11 of each party's 25 candidates.
The Canberra Liberals' Elizabeth Lee, who is all but assured of a seat in Kurrajong, said she was proud to be part of a cohort that boosted the diversity of the Legislative Assembly.
Ms Lee - widely-considered one of the Liberals' strongest newcomers - said elected representatives should represent "a cross section of the diverse community", and said she was proud to help showcase the diversity of Canberra.
She said the Liberals did not have a formal affirmative action policy in place, but were able to achieve strong diversity in preselection regardless. She attributed that to "amazing" support from sitting female members.
"We don't have that formal process in place," she said.
"But we do however have female candidates who are so helpful to future candidates. They're there as mentors and to provide guidance."
