The AFP confirmed the items - along with a set of handcuffs and an extendable baton - had been recovered during a search of John Lewis Wallis's home.

Wallis no longer works for the AFP after he was convicted of a number of offences, including passing restricted information to a convicted criminal.

An AFP spokesperson confirmed Wallis did not have approval to take the items home, but said there was no indication they had been used in any illegal activity.

The spokesperson said the theft had sparked an internal review.

"The AFP regularly considers and reviews the management of its assets including making changes to policies and procedures where appropriate.

"Issues identified in this matter resulted in a review of governance and process to minimise the risk of such incidents occurring again."

Police raided the Queanbeyan home of Wallis, 45, in 2015 to find an AFP training Glock, batons, handcuffs, 2.5 grams of methamphetamine, and three MDMA tablets.

Wallis – a protective services officer - said he had taken the items from Parliament House.

Protective services officers are armed and uniformed, and charged with guarding Commonwealth properties, such as Parliament House, among other duties.

An AFP spokesperson confirmed the items – excluding the drugs – belonged to the force.

"The AFP had not approved that those items be taken home by the former member however there was no indication they were used for any illegal activity.

"Two items were training items and are not considered weapons. One item was a clearly identifiable toy gun made of rubber which is specifically coloured red and designed not to be mistaken for a real firearm.

"The other was a foam covered stick which is a training aid used for baton handling and retention training."

The spokesperson said a set of handcuffs and an extendable baton were also recovered.

Last year, Wallis pleaded guilty in the NSW District Court to a number of Commonwealth offences, including using information gained through his role as a public official with the intention of dishonestly obtaining a benefit, and traffic and possession of drugs.

Justice Phillip Mahony sentenced the offender to one year jail and eight months on a recognisance (good behaviour) order.

The sentence is due to expire in January.

The court, while sitting Queanbeyan, heard Wallis had accessed details of a pimp on the police database for an ex-girlfriend, an alleged sex worker.

Court documents said the alleged sex worker had wanted to work for someone else and gave Wallis a name.

In September 2015, Wallis looked up the man, took screenshots with his phone of the information – including details of the alleged pimp's criminal histories, involvements and locations – and sent them to the man using the mobile number on the database.

Later that month, police stopped Wallis on the Kings Highway where he admitted the breach.

A subsequent raid on his home discovered the stolen items and drugs.
