Gabriela Woutersz, 23, is charged with killing her mother at their family home in Dunlop, and is behind bars awaiting her next court appearance in February.

Details of the alleged murder have remained largely unknown since Woutersz's arrest on the evening of the killing on October 17.

But it is understood that the mother, Norma Cheryl Woutersz, 56, was found dead in the home's backyard.

Her feet and arms were bound with rope, with her arms tied behind her back. She had suffered serious injuries to her head.

It is also understood that dirt had been removed from a garden box near where she lay.

Woutersz first appeared in the ACT Magistrates Court on October 18, the morning after her mother's death.

She was immediately sent for mental health checks at Canberra Hospital, and came back to court a few days later.

Her treating doctor asked for more time to assess her, and she spent more than two weeks back at the psychiatric unit at the hospital.

Woutersz was transferred back to the Alexander Maconochie Centre late last week, and is expected to stay there until mid-February.

She has pleaded not guilty to the charge of murder.

The court was told last month that there were then no issues with her fitness to plead, although that issue can be revisited later in the case.

Woutersz has made no application for bail in her three court appearances.

Her fate will eventually be decided in the ACT Supreme Court, and it is likely that the brief of evidence to be used against her will be complete by the next court appearance in February.

Forensic teams spent considerable time at the house following the killing, remaining there after Woutersz's arrest.

It is understood blood was found around the home and numerous items were seized.

Her mother was well known in ACT childcare circles. She worked as a carer of children for decades, and set up the Montessori childcare centre in Gordon.

Her husband, Keith, described her as a generous-hearted woman, who treated the children she cared for as her own.

Mr Woutersz said she had been a "loving, caring, dedicated wife" and would be sorely missed.

The court has previously been told Gabriela Woutersz may suffer from bipolar disorder.

She also faces an assault charge, dated after she was taken into custody, and traffic offences.

Magistrate Karen Fryar has adjourned the case until February 17.

Woutersz is being represented by Legal Aid.
