Professor Ennis is the third person appointed to the prestigious ANU-based position since the Dobell Chair was established in 1982. She is the first woman to be honoured with the position.
Her predecessors are Professor Michael Greenhalgh and Canberra Times art critic Professor Sasha Grishin.
Head of the School of Art Denise Ferris described Professor Ennis as ''the foremost authority on Australian photography, with a longstanding international reputation''.
The Sir William Dobell Foundation, which supports the Chair, was formed in memory of the Archibald Prize-winning artist, who was known for his landscapes and portrait paintings.
The announcement was made at an exhibition at the ANU Drill Hall Gallery of works from two decades of the Dobell Prize for Drawing.
