QS World University Rankings rated the ANU at 20th in the world based on academic reputation, employer reputation, faculty/student ratio, citations per faculty, international faculty ratio and international student ratio.
The ANU was the highest-rated Australian university and the only new name in the top 20 after being listed at 22 in 2017.
Vice-chancellor Brian Schmidt said: "The latest results are a wonderful testament to the world-leading research and education on offer from the ANU, and the dedication of our staff and students who contribute to make ANU one the great places in the world to work and study.
"ANU is a truly global university, and we work hard to attract the best and brightest students, academics staff and researchers from around the world."
The QS World University Rankings listed the University of Canberra at 551-600, the University of New South Wales at 45 and the Australian Catholic University at 801-1000.
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology topped the list, followed by Stanford University and Harvard University.
The University of Melbourne was the second Australian university in the list, coming in at equal 41st with the Korea Advanced Institute Of Science And Technology.
