Predrag Markovic, a 46-year-old concreter, was denied bail at the ACT Magistrates Court on Saturday morning after the court heard one of the pistols found in his home was loaded and the other had a spent cartridge.
Prosecutor James Walker said Markovic was unlikely to comply with bail conditions because he had shown scant regard for court orders by driving away from the court on Friday after his licence was suspended for three years.
The court heard Markovic was sentenced to three months of periodic detention on Friday, lost his licence and that he had a poor driving record that included eight instances of drink driving.
AFP Constable Paul Reynolds told the court that police were concerned that Markovic would commit further offences if granted bail and might interfere with witnesses.
Constable Reynolds said Markovic had told police he was living alone in the house, which meant that he would have been the sole person in possession of the weapons that were found.
The guns were .45 and .22 pistols and there was ammunition for both.
In support of Markovic's bail application, the court was told he had lived in Canberra for 38 years, was employed and could get to and from work with his brother if granted bail. Markovic's girlfriend was overseas in Serbia and he was in charge of looking after their three dogs.
Markovic had a lengthy criminal history the court was told, but had never been charged with interfering with witnesses in the past. He would also enter a plea at a later date to the allegation he had been driving after his licence was suspended.
Magistrate Peter Dingwall denied bail, saying the allegation Markovic had driven away after having his licence suspended was extremely contemptuous. He adjourned the case until later this month.
