Roads ACT crash statistics reveal more than 300 casualty crashes occurred in the northern suburbs in the past five years.

More than 200 such accidents took place at intersections while another 90 occurred along stretches of road.

Four treacherous intersections in Belconnen were responsible for one fifth of all casualty crashes at intersections in the area.

A Roads ACT statistics show 42 casualty crashes at the four intersections between 2009 and 2013.

Ben McHugh and Karl Cloos from Roads ACT said the government was working toward solutions to improve safety at all four intersections but funding limited the treatments they could use to fix the problems.

The Barton Highway and William Slim/Gundaroo Road roundabout – identified as the second-worst casualty intersection in Belconnen – has received $10 million for signalisation works. But that solution is a stopgap until funding can be found for what will ultimately need to be a flyover for the road.

The Gungahlin Drive and Belconnen Way intersection topped the number of casualty accidents recorded in the past five years with 12.
