ACT Parks and Conservation Service fire management officer Brian Levine said after securing the perimeter of the 2700 hectare site with hand ignition, infill burning would be ignited from aerial pellets dropped from a helicopter. About 80 people, two helicopters, two dozers and three bulk water carriers will be involved. The burn is estimated to take four to seven days.

"Our goal would be to have [Honeysuckle and Orroral camping grounds] open by Easter if possible but we have to do hazard assessments in these public areas," Mr Levine said. "It could take somewhere between five to 10 days, then we have to assess and take down any dangerous trees."

More large burns are planned if suitable fuel and weather conditions prevail, including 900 hectares at Lone Pine. Mr Levine said prescribed burns could take five to 10 years' planning, with each needing specific weather and fuel moisture characteristics.

"That information will tell us, if we light the fire, it will move on its own and actually consume the fuels, because, if we go out there and just skim the tops and only get some of the fire fuels, we won't actually achieve our objectives," Mr Levine said.

Crews have been managing up to four burns at a time this month with the goal of turning high to very high fuel areas into moderate to low fuel areas. The aim is to create a patchwork across Namadgi National Park, to find strategic locations to either gain an advantage on a wildfire or actually have it fizzle out.

"If you look at a whole calendar year and say, well you can't burn during summer because it is fire season, you can't burn in spring because of ecological considerations; you're forced to use autumn and you need to have certain weather," Mr Levine said. "Moisture has to be at a certain level and you have to have certain wind so you are maybe down to 10 days in a whole year.

"So we are constantly studying weather and looking for suitable burn windows, as we call them, to be able to pull the trigger."

In 2013, 6000 hectares were burned under the ACT's bushfire operations plan.

"Prescribed fire is a really good way to cover a large area in a short time," Mr Levine said. "We also do physical removal, slashing and grazing as well. It takes a lot of people to protect the territory. We don't want large fires and this is the best way to manage the landscape as a whole."
