But court documents allege the incident occurred as the accused man's girlfriend was being stretchered away from the scene after being pushed down a set of stairs.
Totini John Totini was yesterday committed to stand trial in the ACT Supreme Court on a charge of recklessly inflicting grievous bodily harm.
But the 22-year-old, through his lawyer, maintained his plea of not guilty in the ACT Magistrates Court committal hearing.
The Richardson man was initially charged with intentionally inflicting grievous bodily harm and negligently causing grievous bodily harm by an unlawful act.
The office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, however, yesterday indicated they would only proceed to trial on the charge of recklessness.
It's alleged the incident left the victim permanently disfigured and shouldering an orthodontic bill of more than $30,000.
A statement of facts was tendered at the committal hearing to outline the case against Totini and allow Magistrate Peter Dingwall to determine if there was a case to answer.
The document reveals Totini, a security officer, was working at Northbar on the evening of December 17 last year.
In the early hours of the morning the defendant's sister allegedly told him his partner had been pushed down the stairs of the nearby Meche nightclub.
An ambulance was called and the injured woman was helped into the back of the vehicle.
Police allege the victim came out of Meche a short time later and asked Totini what had happened.
But in a subsequent interview with police the bouncer allegedly said the other man apologised for ''pushing your girlfriend down the stairs''.
The defendant allegedly told investigators the man pushed into him several times and again apologised.
Totini allegedly said he became irritated and struck the man, using about ''80-90 per cent'' of his strength.
''The defendant has struck out at the victim with a closed right fist and struck him in the jaw with an uppercut-style punch,'' the document states.
''The defendant struck the victim with such force as to cause his head to fly backward and him to lose balance and fall to the ground.''
It is alleged the victim hit his head on the ground and was knocked unconscious.
Security cameras captured the man falling to the ground heavily, but not the reason for his collapse.
The court document states the injured man fractured his jaw in two places, lost one tooth and fractured three others.
He was also treated for a ruptured ear canal and cuts to the chin, ear and tongue.
Totini is due in the ACT Supreme Court for a directions hearing in May.
