Ramps at both ends of the bridge have been washed away and the 60 families who make up the nearby Smiths Road community will be isolated until the bridge is fixed.

It is believed the temporary Bailey bridge will be strong enough to withstand the fast moving water.

A NSW State Emergency Services helicopter flew in yesterday to brief Smiths Road residents about how they could restock their grocery cupboards and medicine cabinets.

Smiths Road resident Jo-Ann McArthur said her pantry was well stocked for occasions such as this.

''There are a lot of children in the community now so it's bad for them,'' the 65-year-old cattle farmer said.

Mother of two Fiona Lonergan said Wednesday would be the earliest the community would be freed from its isolation.

''We need to wait for this latest lot of rain to pass and for the river to drop so the bridge can be fixed,'' the farmer and public servant said.

''The sheep and cattle are not enjoying it - it's pretty wet under foot.''

Homes and livestock at Smiths Road are not threatened because the residents and animals live on higher ground.

The locals have been told to avoid driving on lower sections of the road.

While no supplies were dropped off yesterday, residents were told to ring the SES if they needed essentials such as milk, bread, fruit, toilet paper or medication.

Locals could pay for the items online and have them delivered by an emergency services crew.

Smiths Road residents were worried about a possible bureaucratic delay to fix the Gudgenby Bridge.

Mrs Lonergan said it was technically part of an ACT road but the bridge was not primarily used by territory residents.

Smiths Road, also known as The Angle, is located just across the border in NSW.

''Sometimes we're not seen as high priority,'' she said.
