The defence, filed in the ACT Supreme Court this week, comes despite Brumbies chief executive Michael Jones publicly stating last year that the case wasn't "going to go anywhere", saying the claim was so deficient that it would be thrown out without the Super Rugby club needing to even respond.

The civil action, launched by casino expert John Beagle, centres on the ACT Brumbies major six-year, $8million sponsorship deal with Aquis.

The lucrative deal was crucial for the club, which was facing financial uncertainty after three years of consecutive losses.

In exchange, Aquis, owned by the billionaire Fung family, was given exposure in a city where it was to purchase the sole casino, and launch a major redevelopment to transform the venue into an entertainment precinct.

But Mr Beagle claims he was left out in the cold after helping broker the deal, which was the largest in Brumbies history. He said he helped introduce Aquis and the Brumbies, and was led to believe he would be given a "finder's fee".

Mr Beagle was never paid, and has since launched action in the ACT Supreme Court, claiming "reasonable remuneration for work done and services provided".

After Fairfax Media first reported on the case in September last year, Brumbies chief executive Michael Jones chose to publicly comment on the prospects of its success.

He rejected claims that Mr Beagle helped facilitate the deal, saying the ACT Government introduced Aquis and the Brumbies.

Mr Jones said he was unconcerned by the claim.

"I don't expect it's going to go anywhere. It went before the court and was struck out and he's now appealing it," he said in September.

"We didn't even have to file a defence because the application was deficient and it was chucked out. There's no basis for it whatsoever."

But now, the Brumbies have been forced into filing a defence to Mr Beagle's claims. That means proceedings will continue in the ACT Supreme Court.

Their defence categorically denies that Mr Beagle helped secure the naming rights sponsor for the club.

Part of Mr Beagle's case relies on a meeting between himself, Mr Jones, and Simon Chester, the general manager of commercial operations.

That meeting took place after Mr Beagle had met with Aquis senior executives and president Justin Fung.

But lawyers for the Brumbies state that Mr Jones only met with the casino insider because he represented himself as an agent of Aquis.

"That meeting was terminated by Michael Jones, when it became apparent that the plaintiff was not an agent of Aquis or the Aquis Group and the meeting was otherwise without purpose," the defence reads.

The club denies ever requesting that Mr Beagle help broker the deal, saying it was he who made the offer to do the work.

"It was the plaintiff who offered to perform the services... with a view to the plaintiff obtaining a naming rights sponsor for the defendant.

"The plaintiff failed to obtain, or assist in obtaining, a naming rights sponsor for the defendant."

Mr Beagle says he met with former Brumbies chief executive Doug Edwards and others at the Brumbies about the deal prior to Mr Jones taking over as chief executive.

The ACT Brumbies this week denied rumours that chief executive Michael Jones may be departing, after a board meeting last week sparked rumours about his continued role at the club.

The case continues in the ACT Supreme Court.
