A water main has burst in Gungahlin spraying water 25 metres into the air and damaging nearby apartments.

Four two level apartments on Eckley and Swain Streets were affected and 12 residents were evacuated, when the main burst at about 9.30pm on Monday night.

ACT Fire and Rescue crews isolated power and gas to the area while maintenance crews rectified the issue.

The units sustained water damage to the upper levels and significant damage on the ground floors.
