The pipe had burst just north of a bus stop on Eastern Valley Way, between two sets of traffic lights, a spokeswoman for Actew Water said. It was difficult to determine what caused the pipe to burst, but the amount of water lost "wasn't a great deal".
"The main could have burst for any number of reasons, such as the age of the pipes, a rock sitting against a pipe which has caused a weakness over time, or change of temperature (changing weather patterns cause the ground to expand and contract) which puts pressure on pipes," she said.
The pipe was repaired on Sunday and the road repaired on Monday.
Householders were advised not to use washing machines and dishwashers while the water was discoloured, in case it stained clothes or clogged filters.
No homes lost water or water pressure, but Actew Water had received 11 inquiries about discolouration.
