The cause of the damage was unknown on Monday and ACTEW Water said in a statement it would be difficult to predict what effect it could have.
ACTEW Water said the affected suburbs included Bonython, Gordon, Isabella Plains, Calwell, Richardson, Chisholm, Greenway and Yarralumla.
A spokeswoman for ACTEW Water said a number of houses had lost water entirely, although not entire suburbs.
People may have experienced discoloured water or loss of water pressure for a period of time according to ACTEW, due to the repair works being undertaken by their crews.
Residents were advised not to use washing machines or dishwaters while water is discoloured as it could stain clothes and clog filters.
Crews worked throughout Monday evening to resolve the situation and restore water pressure.
A spokesperson for ACTEW Water said field service crews were on the last burst main at 9.30pm on Monday.
