Australian Marriage Equality deputy director Ivan Hinton-Teoh had just seven days to plan his wedding in 2013 and was astounded by the spontaneous flood of support he received from ACT businesses.

Mr Hinton-Teoh's team of volunteers has worked tirelessly for the past six months, rallying together multinational corporations and some of Australia's biggest businesses to publicly back the campaign.

Regional ads replicating the national format have followed, but Mr Hinton-Teoh said it never occurred to him to create a similar ad campaign in the ACT.

"I feel so loved here and accepted it didn't occur to me to run one like it in Canberra," he said.

Businesses intentionally bringing their weight to bear on a social justice issue was a style of advocacy rarely used in Australia, he said.

"The ad that came out yesterday in The Australian and the one two weeks ago are just the start," he said.

"This is about Australia banding together. And that banding together is from the youngest person to the largest corporation of people that want this issue to be addressed."

Mr Hinton-Teoh said the question mark surrounding whether Australia would chose marriage equality had faded into the distance.

"It is just a matter of when and I genuinely believe there is a distinct possibility that might happen before Christmas," he said.

"Despite that we will be the last English-speaking developed nation to achieve marriage equality. It is something that, as a nation, we are going to be proud of."

Days before he and partner Chris Hinton-Teoh were due to wed a surprise call came from Canberra Convention Bureau general manager Liz Bendeich offering to help with the planning.

Within hours Canberra businesses were donating things or bending over backward to provide cakes, catering, accommodation, floristry, car services, wedding decorations and more in the short timeframe.

The manic week of planning for the ACT's first gay weddings in December 2013 was a moment the local business community were in full support of, she said.

"There were just so many people that jumped at the opportunity to be part of the celebration," she said.

"None of it was for exposure. Providers were getting on board I think because most of us know someone who wants to marry their same sex partner."

Nada Livas of Nada's Cakes created a two-groom wedding cake topper for a rainbow cake made at the Erindale Bakery.

The married mother-of-two said making the toppers was nothing out of the ordinary for her, but she understood why the issue of same sex marriage was heating up.

"It was the first one I have made for a same-sex couple but I am sure when it is legalised there will be more," she said.

"I have friends it does affect and I say to them 'you're practically married anyway who cares?' but it's the fact that they can't. If someone told me I couldn't I would dig my heels in."
