Canberra garbage truck drivers to strike for third time

Twenty-eight suburbs will be affected in this latest strike, as the Transport Workers' Union and ACT government waste contractor Suez argue over severance pay.

ACT NOWaste director Michael Trushell said residents whose garbage pick-up is missed should leave their bins out on the kerb as catchup services are scheduled for Saturday, Sunday and quite possibly Monday.

Those affected can also drop off up to two large plastic garbage bags of excess household rubbish for free at the Mitchell and Mugga Lane Resource Management Centres. Proof of address will be required.

People can also dispose of recyclable materials for free at the six regional recycling drop-off centres.

This will be the third strike for Canberra's garbage collectors in recent weeks as they push for an extra week of redundancy payment per year.

The last strike prompted one enterprising Canberran to tow his wheelie bin to the depot on his push bike.

The union and the contractor have been embroiled in protracted contract negotiations since February.

"The ACT government encourages both parties to continue bargaining in good faith and reach agreement as quickly as possible to avoid disruption to the community," Mr Trushell said.
