A Canberra Liberals spokesman confirmed on Monday the Member for Brindabella had gone to Stephen Skehill for advice on the matter but was yet to hear back as to whether he was in breach of any assembly codes.

The advertisements were made for Rolfe Honda before Mr Parton was elected to the assembly last year but have continued to play in the intervening months.

In his declarations of interests, Mr Parton said he began winding down his marketing business upon taking office.

He said the car dealership owned the ads, and that he did not have a "continuing" financial arrangement with them.

"My contract with Rolfe Honda ceased on the last day of September, but they allowed me the use of a motor vehicle for the month of October. I purchased that vehicle from them in the first week of November," Mr Parton told Fairfax Media last year.

"When you undertake content creation/brand ambassador style contracts with clients, once the content is created, it becomes the property of the client. Hence, you may still see some video content rolling around on social media channels that was created by me, or features me, but it's not indicative of an ongoing arrangement. Likewise there are still radio commercials running that were voiced by me, but they were created well before October."

But some social media commentators pointed out video posted by Mr Parton on the weekend appeared to again promote Rolfe Honda.

The clip he made of his road trip to the Canberra Area Theatre Awards in Dubbo, purportedly to show "how elected members should travel" featured long pans of the Honda logo on his steering wheel.

"Pretty pissweak excuse to plug Rolfe Honda," one person wrote.

In a spray on Facebook on Tuesday, Mr Parton said the only reason he went to Mr Skehill for advice is because of "repeated questions from the Canberra Times".

"When Peter Garrett was elected to the Federal Parliament radio stations continued to play Midnight Oil songs ... and the only difference there is that Peter would have continued to receive royalties from that airplay," Mr Parton wrote.

"Every 'in car' video that I have ever assembled featured cutaways of the steering wheel. Would it honestly be expected to put masking tape on the steering wheel prior to shooting the video ... or to remove any McDonalds signs that might pop up incidentally ... or Coke cans or black out any passing cars because it might reveal their make?"

The former radio host threw himself into running his own Canberra-based marketing and social media company, PartonMe, full-time after quitting his breakfast show on 2CC in 2015.

In February 2016, Mr Parton joined then ACT Liberal leader Jeremy Hanson's staff as a media advisor before months later announcing he himself would have a crack at an assembly seat in the southern Canberra electorate.

Mr Parton said he always intended to wrap up the business if he was elected to the assembly as he "didn't fancy the distraction of attending to clients in any way".

"I feared there would always be the potential for some conflict of interest. I lost a number of clients during the campaign for a number of reasons, mainly natural attrition. In the context of the campaign, it was not really possible for me to seek new business," Mr Parton said.

It isn't against the rules for members of the legislative assembly to have a side gig, so long as they disclose the job and the income they make.

There was even a lawyer in one of the first assemblies who kept practicing while in office.

But last year the Standards Commissioner raised concerns about Chief Minister Andrew Barr endorsing real estate group Dexar in a video outside the Legislative Assembly.

Standards Commissioner Ken Crispin cleared Mr Barr of any wrongdoing but in his report reiterated the code of conduct requires parliamentarians to avoid conflicts of interest or situations that could give rise to perceptions of conflict, and to act in the public interest.

(Dr Crispin also stressed there was no suggestion the endorsement of Dexar brought any personal benefit to Mr Barr and there was no indication of an improper motive.)

Mr Barr told Fairfax Media it was not appropriate for parliamentarians to promote businesses in a paid capacity.

"It probably isn't the smartest sales strategy for Honda - I imagine sales of their cars to Labor voters (the largest group of Canberrans) would plummet," Mr Barr said.

Steven Bailey from the Australian Sex Party, who also stood for a seat in Brindabella in the last election, said there was a "clear conflict of interest".

"You can't have a sitting member of parliament endorsing one commercial operation or another in the ACT. It's not hard for all the [radio] endorsements that Mr Parton has made to be re-voiced - even if that is at Liberal Party expense. It's simply the right thing to do," Mr Bailey said.

It is not the first time Mr Skehill has been asked to provide advice regarding Mr Parton.

Liberal leader Alistair Coe spoke to Mr Skehill before appointing Mr Parton as their new racing and gaming spokesman, given he owned shares in two race horses.

Rolfe Honda did not return calls on Monday afternoon.
