This is the premise behind Canberra's newest choir - Alchemy Chorus - established last month for Canberrans with early to medium level dementia and their carers. The effect of music as a therapy is well documented and used extensively in nursing homes for those suffering dementia around the world.
According to the choir's founder and director, Brian Triglone, Alchemy Chorus offers opportunities for solos and voice parts, and the choir's repertoire is chosen by the participants. Brian said the response to the choir had been "wonderful".
"Rather than just being a singalong group, it is an actual 'working choir' and the emphasis is on enjoyment," he said.
"There are no auditions and everyone is very welcome, whether they are experienced singers, shower singers or even those who were told by their primary teacher never to sing in public."
