The Braddon institution, which is a popular spot for those on the hunt for a birthday present, will close its doors at the end of September.
Owner Nik Bulum said he's sad to close the store.
"I started Unit as a project to activate the street when I came back from Sydney. I noticed Canberra lacked all this and living in Melbourne and Sydney, there's design stores everywhere," he said.
"So it was a way to kind of activate and introduce a different kind of boutique street strip, and it did its job, it worked. I mean the street's busy, there are shops here. But I've grown attached with it – I was only meant to do it for a few years but I kept on loving it and going."
Bulum has decided to close the business to focus on his new projects, namely the Nibu and Palko developments on Lonsdale Street, and a development at the Canberra City Bowling Club.
"Like a good TV series, it's been good, and I've been so busy with the rest of the projects I'm working on, new exciting stuff, that I can't give it that same crazy passion I used to give [Unit Concepts] so I thought end it now, while it's high and evolve into something else."
Over the years the store has existed in the space where the original Debacle sat, across the road in a larger store before then moving to two different locations within Lonsdale Street Traders, and then to its current location in the Ori building.
The shop will be replaced with an independent women's fashion and accessory store.
From now until closing day there will be sales, and they're also putting lots of stock into the store from the store room. But this may not be the last we see of Unit Concepts.
"I'm crazy enough to reopen something after a while. Unit Concepts may come back in five years," he said.
