Less than a year after the Australian National Homebrewing Conference was held in ACT for the first time, the May 2 event at Westside Acton Park will give Canberrans another yet another opportunity to take their home brewing hobby to the next level and learn how to turn malt into beer.

Canberra Brewers social secretary Tony Hill said last year's event saw 66,434 litres of beer all brewed on the same day by 14 participating countries.

"We are bringing brewers from all over the world together, last year we had 8000 brewers, brewing the same beer on the same day," he said.

"It brings our club together instead of sitting in the garage alone brewing."

Eight different national award-winning brewers will showcase a range of brewing setups, teaching everything from the cheapest beginner gear options, which start at $100, to the 'all grain' computer-controlled system, which can cost anywhere upwards of $5000.

Mr Hill said the beauty of the day was that none of the 437 events held last year was the same.

"There are all different types of events. In Brisbane one of the blokes is doing something in his backyard (and) in previous years we have done it in breweries, and this year we have made it a public facing event for everyone to come down and check out," he said.

For more than 25 years, the American Homebrewer's Association has been releasing new recipes for brewers around the world to 'mash in' – a term given to tipping the grain into a mash tun to commence the brew – at the annual event.

Locally, homebrewing has been growing in popularity and Canberra Brewers now has 140 members on its books.

"It brings together the community," Mr Hill said.

"Canberra Brewers are in our 20th year so it provides Canberrans a place to come together and celebrate craft and making things.

"It's a great way for people to appreciate the styles of beer we make and they get to enjoy a good quality product."

In the ACT the event has previously been limited to members, but the location of this year's event has allowed public access with food outlets and activities for the kids.

Rockmann and Rush director Jerry Francis said Westside Acton Park was a space that has been given to community-based projects to showcase and introduce new elements of what Canberra has to offer.

"For the last couple years they have been working on it [homebrew day] in a smaller environment, this one, we can market to a broader audience being in the biggest artery in Canberra," Mr Francis said.

Westside Acton Park will not be the only place in Canberra to celebrate the art of brewing. Braddon's Bentspoke brewery will be starting their 'mash in' from 11.30am onwards.

For beer lovers, head brewer Richard Watkins will brew strong ale as a taste of Bentspoke's first birthday beer with an opportunity for the public to watch and learn.

Brewers are encouraged to bring along some of their own homebrew for people to try and the first 50 will receive a free beer.

Simple methods of brewing are estimated to take around two hours, with the more complex systems taking anywhere up to five. Mr Hill said the unique crafting of a homebrew will always outweigh commercial beer options.

"You can put exactly what you want into it and unlike commercial brewers, we aren't too worried about adding that little bit of extra cost to every batch."
