According to Thea van Veen aka Bohemeth Rhapsody who plays for the Black Hearts, the league has increased in popularity over the past few years.

"We have a lot of families that love to come now – a lot of regulars and diehards that get really involved in the teams which is pretty cool," she said.

"But it's just like a really fun night and for people who've never been to a game, we do explain the rules and everything."

Bohemeth discovered the game herself just by heading along to a bout six years ago.

"A lot of people as soon as they've seen one game will want to come back again and again. I got hooked after my first game and signed up straight away," she said.

"My dad actually works with someone who played and he got tickets and then at half time at that game I went and put my name down to join. I couldn't skate at all when I signed up."

While the Surly Griffins ended last season undefeated, Bohemeth said the Black Hearts are ready to even the score.

"The grand final was a really close game, so I think we're all a bit eager to prove ourselves and take them out pretty early in the competition," she said.

"We actually have a skater that represented Team Australia at the roller derby world cup at the end of last year, and a skater who represented Team Finland who's just moved to Canberra. So expect a good game."

The Surly Griffins play the Red Bellied Black Heartsat Southern Cross Stadium, Tuggeranong on March 28. Doors open at 5pm, game from 6pm. Tickets available at the door.
