An "amazing random act of kindness" is how Wanniassa music teacher Jenny Spear describes it.
It seems her nine-year-old staffy Pumpkin is a bit of an escape artist and recently got out of her yard by pushing aside bricks that were blocking a hole in the side gate. Jenny was out at the time.
Lucky for her, young tradie Josh Lancaster was working nearby and found Pumpkin running up the road towards him before "straight on to her back for a tummy rub".
He called the number on Pumpkin's collar and got Jenny who was at work.
Josh said he would return Pumpkin back home and "see what he could do".
He got Pumpkin back in the yard and blocked up the hole but it wasn't long before the dog had escaped again. So Josh took an old iron gate he'd just removed from the job he was working on and used it, some wood and some occy straps to secure Jenny's fence.
But then he returned the next day and took the whole gate off, moved it closer to the post, rebolted it and put a new latch on the gate. All without payment or any fanfare. Just a lovely surprise for Jenny who told her story on Facebook. Her post was then shared by dog walker Carolyn Kidd, who put the story on her North Canberra business' Facebook page Dogs on the Run.
From there, the love started pouring in for Josh, everyone impressed by his thoughtfulness.
His employer, WR Engineering in Fyshwick, also chimed in saying he was indeed a very kind and humble bloke.
And he's only 19.
"I didn't expect Josh to be so young. You just don't expect that thoughtfulness and kindness from the younger generation," Carolyn said.
Jenny and Josh - with Pumpkin - were reunited this week where a very grateful Jenny personally thanked him for his efforts.
"Pumpkin couldn't have run into a nicer human than Josh. What a great guy. Respect and gratitude," she said.
Originally from Cooma, Josh went to schools in Tuggeranong.
He was taken aback by all the attention simply saying "Everyone's a dog lover aren't they?".
As a bizarre coincidence, Jenny used to teach Callum McPhie, Canberra's heavy metal 10-year-old who has managed to impress Ozzy Osbourne. The capital's one-degree of seperation at work.
