Dozens of residents will simultaneously sell unwanted furniture, electronics and knick-knacks in the name of sustainability at the Garage Sale Trail on October 24.

The event is designed to promote the reuse of unwanted goods and, as a result, reduce landfill across Australia.

Sale holders can also choose to donate the money raised to charities of their choice.

Founder Darryl Nichols got the ball rolling with the help of Territory and Municipal Services Minister Shane Rattenbury at a special sport-themed sale in Civic Square on Thursday.

Sporting groups, the Green Shed and members of the Legislative Assembly donated sporting memorabilia and equipment to the lunchtime stall, which raised money for the Bettong Bungalow.

The ACT-based wildlife charity is dedicated to establishing a reserve for the eastern bettong, a marsupial that went extinct on the Australian mainland in the early 20th century.

Mr Nichols said the cause perfectly aligned with the Garage Sale Trail, which he established in his home suburb of Bondi five years ago.

The push for sustainability and landfill reduction has since received the support of every state and territory government, while also making its debut in Britain this year.

But as the event's profile has grown, so too have the eccentricities of some of its participants.

"Last year there were two grandpas who listed themselves for sale in Canberra," Mr Nichols said.

"Their description on the page said that they were good for mowing the grass or cups of tea on the balcony."

Everyone that registers a sale on the trail has the choice to name their event, which has led to names ranging from "The Almost Deceased Estate" to "It's A Divorce!" and even "The Only Lionel Vinyl Sale".

The latter, as the name suggests, sold only Lionel Richie records.

"It is a bit of fun and we do encourage people to express themselves," Mr Nichols said.

"Every year we're inspired and bewildered by the breadth and depth of items that get listed for sale."

According to an ACT NOWaste survey in 2014-15, more than 70 per cent of waste generated in the territory was either re-used or recycled.

However, a June survey found just over half of Territorians recycled all of their recyclable items, while 73 per cent agreed residents should personally take more action towards reducing their waste levels.
