One hundred years ago this week there was some Canberra bashing going on, but the federal parliament bashed back. The Queanbeyan Age rejoiced to report that good news.

"THE FEDERAL CAPITAL.
"In the House of Representatives Mr. Palmer the member for Echuca, asked the House to express the opinion that the expenditure upon the Federal capital should be reduced to a minimum during the present financial stress caused by the drought and the war.
"But the member for Echuca could not secure a single supporter for his proposal. It was defeated after a brief discussion in the course of which the Minister for Home Affairs (Mr. Archibald) called Mr. Palmer as small in brain as he was in stature. But Mr. Palmer in turn called the Minister a highly gifted, polished man, who was an adornment to the office he occupied."
Mr Archibald told the House that there were 700 men working on the building of Canberra and that they'd keep working because the city was a national vision that needed to come to pass.
Elsewhere in this edition the Age was full of the war mood. It warned local boys and men of looming "COMPULSORY TRAINING FOR THE QUEANBEYAN DISTRICT."
"Captain F. Wedd will arrive in Queanbeyan during the next few days for the purpose of having all trainees whose birthday falls in 1915, from 14 to 21 years, medically examined and measured for uniforms. All liable to training will be notified the date when they must present themselves. The Compulsory Training Act will be strictly enforced."
