Looking exactly like the kind of hot beverage Gomez might whip up for Morticia, a gothic coffee starts with dissolving coconut-activated charcoal in hot liquid, and then adding your favourite coffee over the top. So in reality, gothic mochas, cappuccinos and flat whites are all options.

Nat Lange of Queanbeyan-based mobile coffee business Espresso Yourself introduced gothic coffee to her menu on Tuesday and it was an instant hit. The sinister side of her customers came out in force and she sold 50 on the first day.

"I'm thrilled that more people than I thought were willing to try a gothic coffee on day one," she said.

A bit of a 'dark soul' herself - she has gargoyle statues out the front of the family home and a penchant for Dracula - Nat said she introduced the hot gothic drinks as a way to keep her coffee menu creative.

She also offers unicorn lattes (think marshmallows and bright sprinkles), dirty bees (honey-flavoured coffee) and ginger ninjas (ginger-spiced coffee). And if you can't decide on the day whether you're in a rainbow or an evil mood, you can mix up flavours and go for a gothic unicorn.

While black teeth and a black coffee moustache are the potential hazards of gothic coffee (make sure you check in a mirror before you head into that meeting), the upside is the charcoal has health benefits in the form of helping detox your digestive system.

"But if you're on medication you need to chat to the barista first as it may affect your meds," Nat said.
