The Anzac centenary and how Canberra and surrounding regions responded to World War I are to take centre stage at this year's Heritage Festival which kicks off next week.

The Canberra and Region Heritage Festival festival - now in its 34th year - will feature more than 130 events and activities over 15 days, beginning on April 9.
A torchlight tour through a graveyard, archaeology at Springbank and Lanyon, Aboriginal tours of country and an exhibition of fauna and flora at Black Mountain are among the events offered during the festival.
There will also be open days, exhibitions and forums stretching from Gunning and Bungendore to Nimmitable and Yass.
Launching the festival on Wednesday, Planning Minister Mick Gentleman said the townships provided valuable insight into the region's involvement in World War I.
Mr Gentleman said the theme of this year's festival was Conflict and Compassion, which tied into the centenary of the Anzacs.
"Many events explore the local community's response to the Great War as part of the frontline action or by supporting them on the homefront," he said.
Mr Gentleman said with the festival on during school holidays, there would also be a number of family-friendly activities.
